Kirschenmann is one of the great old-vine Lodi sites, planted in 1915, and Turley does exactly what Turley does best: bottle California history in a way that is joyful, generous and still seriously made.

The 2019 is in a gorgeous place now — wild strawberry, black cherry, bramble, orange peel, warm spice and a little dusty, tea-like savouriness. Big flavour, yes, but not a jam bomb. There’s lift, perfume and old-vine depth. BBQ, brisket, ribs, burgers, chilli, pizza — you know what to do.
