I started tasting a lot of Viognier in the early parts of my career (rather popular in Virginia, believe it or not), and always enjoyed how it straddles between aromatic varieties and fuller-bodied whites. As some point, I adopted the belief that Viognier has to be REALLY good, to be any good at all. I don't know if thats an absolute truth, but I certainly became pickier when it came to stocking Viognier. Enter the Lieu-dit "Verlieu", 100% Viognier from Yves Cuilleron – Viognier lovers rejoice! It's SO DAMN GOOD. A punchy nose of white flowers and yellow fruits. Mouthfilling texture and complexity, with a long finish. It's youthful strength is not deterred by, but rather reinforced, by the signature bitter finish of the grape.
