Beare Green Winery, Sounder Pinot Noir Pink - 2023
Beare Green Winery, Sounder Pinot Noir Pink - 2023
Destined to be a UK cult classic, the Sounder Pink is more reminiscent to a highly sought after and expensive Jura bottle than any rosé currently produced in the UK. Just the right amount of funk and reductive flinty smoke, the wine is juicy and thirst quenching, but also has a puzzling quality that ultimately keeps you coming back for more. Truly as good as UK's still wines get – you'd expect nothing less from Jimmy Smith, Jura junkie and one of the UK's most celebrated wine educators. Along with his partners, Bethany Patterson and winemaker Sam Hill, they're changing the UK wine game one bottle at a time.
The St. Mary's vineyard is located in the hills north of Brighton on chalky soils. This is a cool site that is ideal for crafting complex pink wines from Pinot Noir. The grapes are hand-harvested and crushed at BGW with around 48-72 hours skin contact as the wine ferments in old French oak barriques at cool temperatures. This extended timing of skin maceration gives deeper colour and more flavour, whilst barrel fermentation and ageing develops complex tertiary notes. BGW bottles all their pink wines in darker green bottles (instead of clear bottles) as they respect and love their wines, and this type of bottle protects the wine against light damage which is common on clear bottlings. 100% Pinot Noir (Clone 386).
