Cahors, in SW France is known for producing the Malbec grape - and admittedly, I have often found them too big, too tannic, too rustic. In comes La Calmette, founded by Maya Sallee and Nicolas Fernandez, a young couple who in 2015 came across various parcels in the Trespoux-Rassiels subzone of Cahors and started making their own wines in the 2016 vintage. This wine is unoaked and super juicy. Inky but medium bodied, super vibrant purple fruit and perfect acid to keep it super fresh. 10% Merlot comes in big-time with the freshness.
