Cataldo Calabretta, Ciro Rosso Classico Superiore - 2017
Cataldo Calabretta, Ciro Rosso Classico Superiore - 2017
This is a quintessential Italian Red. Spiced cherry, sage, and volcanic mineral character are defining characteristics of the Ciro appellation, which produces wines from the native Gaglioppo (gah-lee-oh-poe) grape. This expression is lifted and bright, but with significant palate weight and shape - a perfect winter-warmer. Red wine made with gaglioppo grapes from hilly clay-limestone soils bush trained with yields per hectare of 5 tons in the historic Ciro DOC production zone. The grapes for this Ciro Rosso were harvested by hand in crates in the first week of October. maceration for two weeks, ageing in a cement vessel for 10 months. Cataldo Calabretta is a fourth generation winemaker whose main focus over the past decade has been to improve the health and sustainability of his family's holdings, located in long flat tracts of land that run all the way to the sea. - Nathan Lithgow
