Birgit Braustein - Neusiedlersee, Austria
Hailing from Burgenland, Birgit Braunstein, like her wines, is an absolute joy.
Her philosophy is simple: treat her vines, grapes and wines with mindfulness, conscientiousness and intention.
Demeter certified since 2009, she manages her plants in harmony with nature, intervening and feeling what is needed, rather than aimlessly toiling away.
It's not really surprising that she has such an intuitive understanding of the land, given her family have been making wines there for over 400 years!
Her rosé is a standout and just keeps getting better. I can still recall the first time I tasted this wine, nearly four years ago. It's not often I find myself saying "Damn, that's a tasty Rosé!". It's a victory when you discover one. Half a year resting in tank with the fine lees (dead yeast) makes for very friendly texture, the wine is naturally fermented and bottled unfined and unfiltered with small sulphur additions.
